Bonita Springs City Council voted today to create a Bike/Ped Advisory Committee

Kudos to the Bonita Springs City Council for creating a Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee!  A special thanks to Councilwoman Janet Martin for bringing forward the proposal.

At the Oct. 17th Bonita Springs City Council meeting, Councilwoman Janet Martin brought forward a proposal, supported by staff and approved by the Council, to create a Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee.  According to the "green sheet", the purpose of the committee will be "to improve the conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians in the City of Bonita Springs, promote bicycling and walking as a means of transportation and enhance safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.  The Committee will review relevant ordinances, organize public events and works with other bicycle and pedestrian organizations at the state and national levels."

Among several reasons given for promoting bicycling and walking, the list included "providing equity and access to viable, affordable transportation options and creates fun, vibrant and livable neighborhoods."

The Committee will meet on the third Monday of every month.  Nicole Perino, Parks and Rec Director, will serve as the staff liaison and Councilwoman Janet Martin will serve as the council person liaison.  If you live in Bonita Springs and are interested in serving as a member of this committee, contact Nicole Perino at nicole.perino@cityofbonitasprings.org.

It's great to see the local jurisdictions placing more emphasis on the value of biking and walking in their communities.  Progress is being made throughout the county on implementing the recommendations of the countywide Lee MPO Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan adopted by the MPO Board in June 2011.
