Veterans/Santa Barbara intersection will now be part of corridor planning

Background: In January, LeeDOT presented a series of options for Veterans and Santa Barbara intersection in the Cape.  (See BWL's earlier blog post.) Concerns were raised by the Cape Coral Council, the CSAC and its complete streets working group, BikeWalkLee, as well as others.  LeeDOT presented its recommendations to the BoCC at its 2/6/12 Management and Planning meeting.

At Monday's M and P meeting, LeeDOT recommended to BoCC that the current contract end “to allow the upcoming planning processes to determine the future configuration of the corridor.”  Here’s quote from staff paper…”From staff’s point of view, a re-examination of Veterans Parkway should take in the whole corridor, including Burnt Store Road and Colonial Boulevard, and at that scale should be re-examined through the Lee County MPO’s multi-jurisdictional planning process.” Click here to read the staff "blue sheet".

While no decisions are made at M and P meetings, it was clear from the discussion that the Board plans to adopt the staff's recommendation.  Doing a holistic corridor plan which takes into account Cape Coral's land use plans and its vision for their community is the right approach.
