Think outside the box: Solar Highways

Solar Highways

This is a short video of a revolutionary way to build roads for the 21st century, which was designed by a company that won a USDOT grant. Yes, Solar Roadways proposes to pave roads with solar panels that you can drive on. It’s an intelligent pavement that generates power & pays for itself. Check it out!

  1. Wow -- if this design can detect a pedestrian, then surely it can detect a bicycle! Think about having sharrows light up and/or blink to warn an approaching driver that a bicyclist is up ahead. OR, a program could "restripe" the road to favor more lanes for commuters, i.e. the road could add a lane to assist heavier volume in a particular direction, then change back to the normal pattern. Lots of possibilities here!!
